Lets assume that you had a few months free, not much money, a motorcycle & a tent.

Which roads would you take from Mexico to Alaska ? What would you want to see on the way ? Camping, yup, but where ?

Right now I'm in Peru & am trying to sort all of this out. I want to find the 'end of the road' in Alaska late-June/July next year but being a Brit means I know virtually nothing about the US. Its a big place.

Suggestions welcome...

Sounds like quite a trip you’re planning on. I don’t know what part of Mexico you’re coming through, I would head west to California and pretty much follow the coast on highways 1 and 101 camping at various campgrounds all the way up through Vancouver British Columbia. There will be coastal camping areas on your left and plenty of forest land on your right as you make your way through California, Oregon, and Washington. It’s about 1500 miles from San Diego CA to Seattle Washington. Once you’ve made it to Vancouver BC it looks like about 2500 miles to Anchorage, Alaska. I’m not at all familiar with BC so hopefully somebody will be able to guide you through there. Good Luck and good adventures.

I'm not really into burning up highways, backroads & scenery are more my thing.

Its been a brilliant experience so far & horribly addictive. SO different to riding in Europe with all the laws, regulations, speed cameras and all the other things the govt does to take the fun out of biking.

Sorry about that.

I'm still in S.America, currently in Lima (Peru) sorting stuff out so I can get to Ecuador. Updating diary, website (see http://www.smellybiker.com) and building GPS maps so I can swap them for beer tokens.

Thought the bike was in good shape but now the valve clearances need attention (starting to sound like a diesel).

Theres a lot to be said for valves you can adjust with a spanner rather than shims....nice in principle, if you can find replacement shims! Hope to get that sorted in Quito, no chance in Peru.

I was gonna say the same thing. Even though it is a highway, it is probably one of the most beautiful drives in this country. Find the best route through Mexico, start in L.A. and just work your way up Highway 1 along the coast. It's an incredible view almost the whole time.
